7 Steps To Prepare For LASIK
Congratulations! You made it as an approved LASIK candidate! LASIK has changed millions of lives since it was FDA approved in the 1990s.
After all, LASIK has a 96% success rate! You’ll need to follow a few steps to prepare for LASIK, and we’ve got a list of seven steps to get you started!
Read on to learn more about preparing for LASIK!
1. Put in for time off at work
Once your surgery date is scheduled, you’ll need to notify the appropriate party or parties at work. Talk to your LASIK surgeon for the number of days they recommend you request off for recovery.
Most patients are back at work in about 24 hours, but you might need a few more days. Every case is different. It’s not a bad idea to consider having LASIK on a Friday so you have the weekend to relax and recover.
2. Set up your ride home
You don’t want to wait until the last minute on this one. You are not allowed to drive yourself home after having LASIK. The procedure will probably wipe you out, so it’s best to have a ride in advance.
Ask a friend or family member that you trust so you know you’ll get home. This isn’t the day you’ll want to try out the public bus system!
3. Recruit a friend
If it’s possible, see if you can recruit a friend to come along with you. Not only can they be your moral support, but then they can drive you home. You’ll want to keep things as simple as possible.
4. Arrange for a hotel
This point only applies to you if the LASIK surgery center is far from where you live. Consider booking a room for two nights: the night before and the day of your surgery.
Since you’ll have to arrive early, it might be a good idea to stay in a nearby hotel the night before. This is especially true if you are traveling for a few hours or more.
After your procedure, your designated driver could go relax at the hotel pool. Trust us when we say, all you’ll want to do is climb into bed and sleep.
Not sure where to book? Call your LASIK surgery center ahead of time to inquire about nearby hotels.
5. No (alcoholic) drinks allowed
Alcohol can dry your eyes out, so you’ll want to steer clear of drinking 24 hours before LASIK. Don’t plan any parties the day after LASIK, because you shouldn’t drink for 2 days after as well.
But it’s not only the kind of alcohol you ingest that you need to watch out for. To be safe, avoid any styling products like hairspray and mousse, as well as perfumes and colognes.
These can easily dry out your eyes while you’re still recovering from LASIK!
6. Avoid makeup
On the day before and day of LASIK, do not wear any makeup. To be safe, you shouldn’t wear any makeup for at least a week after LASIK.
Unfortunately, makeup can be the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. After a procedure like LASIK, your eyes will be more vulnerable to infection. Don’t wear any eye makeup until you feel comfortable with it. That mascara isn’t going anywhere!
7. Dress comfortably
On surgery day, dress comfortably in clothes that are loose and easy to breathe in. Leggings, a hoodie, and sneakers are an easy outfit that you can then sleep in later on.
