The Snowbird Eye Care Checklist: What to Schedule While You’re Near Marco Island This Season

Arriving for the season near Marco Island usually comes with a to-do list: open up the house, restock the kitchen, and get back on the tee sheet. Your eyes deserve a spot on that list too. A few months in Southwest Florida is a great window to catch up on eye care, especially if your vision has changed since last season.

Ginsberg Eye is located in Naples, about 18 miles from Marco Island, and many of our patients are seasonal residents. Use this checklist to make the most of your time here.

1. Book a Comprehensive Eye Exam

If it has been a while since your last full exam, start there. A comprehensive visit is the best way to get a clear picture of your eye health and talk through any changes you have noticed. If your previous eye doctor has retired, our office staff are happy to assist with transferring your records from another doctor. Call our Naples office at 239.325.2015 to schedule.

2. Pay Attention to Cloudy or Dim Vision

Cataracts tend to form slowly, so changes can sneak up on you. Clouded or blurry vision, sensitivity to light, halos around lights, fading colors, and trouble seeing at night are all common signs. Take our cataract self-test, and if you are a candidate, consider cataract surgery near Marco Island.

Lens options at Ginsberg Eye include the light-adjustable lens, which can be fine-tuned after surgery once your eye has healed. Because cataract surgery and any follow-up care take time, it helps to start the conversation early in your stay.

3. Reassess Your Reading Glasses

If you are over 45 and reading glasses have become a must, or night driving has become harder, the change is likely coming from the eye’s natural lens. Ginsberg Eye explains this process as Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome. Starting around age 42, the natural lens begins to stiffen and lose focusing power.

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) replaces the natural lens with a custom-selected intraocular lens to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses, contacts, and reading glasses. RLE is performed in our in-office surgery suite in Naples and takes about 10 minutes per eye. Try our RLE self-evaluation to see if it may be right for you.

4. Ask About LASIK If You Are Under 45

For younger patients who rely on glasses or contacts, All Laser LASIK may be an option. LASIK is typically for patients 18 to 45 and is performed in our in-office suite in Estero. Call our Estero office at 239.325.2020 to schedule a LASIK consultation.

5. Do Not Ignore Dry, Gritty Eyes

Island life is wonderful, but environmental factors such as wind, dry air, allergens, and Red Tide can contribute to dry eye symptoms. If your eyes feel dry, gritty, red, or tired, let us know.

Ginsberg Eye offers dry eye treatment, including Lumecca IPL therapy. This non-invasive in-office treatment typically lasts about 20 minutes, and you can return to your normal activities right away.

6. Plan Procedures Around Your Calendar

If you decide on a procedure, timing matters. We recommend scheduling your consultation early in your stay, and Ginsberg Eye will schedule your follow-up visits with you after your procedure. That way, your care is complete before you head north.
