Why Diabetic Eye Exams in Southwest Florida Are So Essential

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) can affect many different aspects of your life, including your eyes. Because it prevents the body from using and storing sugar properly, it can lead to excessive amounts of sugar in the bloodstream. This can lead to damage to blood vessels throughout the body, including in areas around the eyes. That’s why a diabetic eye exam is so important. It detects early eye issues due to diabetes and allows you to receive treatment as soon as possible.

What is a Diabetic Eye Exam?

A diabetic eye exam is a comprehensive eye exam that focuses on detecting eye diseases caused by diabetes, like diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. At our office, Suzana Akemi Tanimoto, PA-C is who performs most of our diabetic eye exams.

Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels inside the eye start to leak blood and fluid into the retina, causing damage and permanent vision loss. By having a diabetic eye exam, we can detect this condition early and ensure you receive treatment as soon as possible to preserve your vision.

Diabetic macular edema

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a complication of diabetic retinopathy and occurs when the macula, or the center of the retina, starts to swell. This can damage the blood vessels behind the eye and lead to vision loss.

While a diabetic eye exam can sometimes look like a regular eye exam, it typically includes pupil dilation, retinal imaging, and other tests to check the health of the retina, blood vessels, and optic nerve behind the eye.

Preparing for a Diabetic Eye Exam

To prepare for your diabetic eye exam, you will want to ensure you have your medical history and a list of medications you take. If you’ve had any recent vision changes or new symptoms, make sure to bring those up during your appointment as well. You will also likely want a friend or family member to drive you to and from your eye exam. Your eyes will be dilated, and it can take several hours before the effects wear off. Sunglasses can also help with any light sensitivity.

If there are any questions you have, bringing a list can help you remember to bring them up to our team.

Benefits of Regular Diabetic Eye Exams

If you have diabetes, scheduling regular diabetic eye exams with Ginsberg Eye can come with several benefits and ultimately save your vision. Some of the benefits you can expect include:

  • Early detection: One of the greatest benefits of regular diabetic eye exams is that they can detect eye-related diabetic complications like diabetic retinopathy and DME. With early detection, treatment can be started early and be more effective at preserving your vision.
  • Tracks disease progression and treatment: If you do have diabetic retinopathy, regular diabetic eye exams can track the progression of the disease and determine if treatment is working.
  • Manages diabetes: Eye health is closely linked to blood sugar control. Consistent monitoring of your eyes can encourage better overall diabetes management.
  • Cost-effective: Proactive diabetic eye exams and early treatment can help avoid more costly treatments that are often needed for more advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy.
