About Sanibel Island
Sanibel Island is a barrier island and a city in Lee County near the southwest coast of Florida. It’s connected to mainland Florida via the Sanibel Island causeway and is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The island is most well-known for its shell beaches and wildlife refuges, including the J.N. Darling National Wildlife Refuge. It’s also home to the 19th-century Sanibel Lighthouse and a boardwalk winding through marshes. The city also features a number of golf courses and plenty of areas for fishing and boating.
What is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?
Refractive lens exchange or RLE surgery is a laser vision correction procedure that is designed to correct refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It’s also perfect for patients who want to no longer wear glasses or contact lenses, and anyone struggling with dysfunctional lens syndrome.
During the procedure, we’ll administer a mild sedative and apply numbing eye drops to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. From there, Dr. Ginsberg will use ultrasound and a femtosecond laser to remove the eye’s natural lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to correct your vision.
The IOLs we offer at Ginsberg Eye include monofocal, toric, multifocal, extended depth of focus, and light adjustable lens. Which one is right for you will depend on your refractive error.
Who is a Candidate for the RLE Procedure?
If you’re struggling with a severe refractive error or a very strong prescription for your eyeglasses or contacts, RLE is likely a good option for you. Additionally, we also follow certain criteria to determine if this surgical procedure is right for a patient.
Ideal Candidates for Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery in Sanibel Island Are:
- In good overall health
- Over the age of 45
- Want to rely less on glasses or contact lenses
- Ineligible for LASIK surgery or PRK
If you have corneal eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, uveitis, diabetic retinopathy, or risk factors for retinal detachment, this refractive surgery may not be for you.
RLE Benefits
RLE in Sanibel Island offers several benefits, including the following:
- Quick recovery time: Most patients can get back to their normal activities within a few days after surgery.
- Short procedure time: The RLE procedure only takes ten minutes per eye.
- No need for cataract surgery in the future: Because cataracts only form on the eye’s natural lens, you never have to worry about developing cataracts or undergoing cataract surgery after RLE.
- Long-lasting results: The IOL implants are permanent, meaning you will have exceptional vision for years to come.
- Less of a need for glasses and/or contacts: The main benefits of RLE are that it reduces or completely eliminates your need for glasses or contacts.
