About Marco Island

Marco Island is a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico off the southwest coast of Florida. It’s linked to the mainland by a few different bridges that are just south of Naples. Being a popular island, it’s home to a number of luxury resorts, beaches, and golf courses. The island has a population of around 16,000 residents and is home to the Key Marco Cat and other artifacts from the Calusa Indians and the Tigertail Beach. With so many beaches and wildlife, outdoor recreational activities are very popular, including paddleboarding, fishing, boating, and kayaking.

What is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?

RLE is a laser vision correction surgery that is used to correct several refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The surgery is most often done on patients with powerful prescriptions to allow them to say goodbye to glasses and contact lenses. It can also treat Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome (early clouding of the natural lens).

During the surgical procedure, the natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The lens may be a monofocal lens, multifocal lens, or light-adjustable lens, depending on the refractive error you’re correcting. To ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure, we’ll give you a mild sedative and numbing eye drops. Dr. Ginsberg will then use ultrasound and a femtosecond laser to remove the eye’s natural lens and replace it with the lens implant. The procedure takes about ten minutes per eye, and each eye is operated on about one week apart. Some of the side effects afterward include halos or glares, but those will subside over time.

The RLE surgery is similar to cataract surgery. The only difference is that no cataract is removed during RLE.

Who is a Candidate for Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery?

Most patients who are struggling with refractive errors are good candidates for refractive lens exchange. That said, there are some criteria we follow to determine each patient’s eligibility.

Ideal Candidates for RLE in Marco Island Are:

  • Have extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness
  • Ineligible for LASIK surgery
  • Want to rely less on glasses or contact lenses
  • Age 45 or older

If you have corneal disease, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or risk factors for retinal detachment, RLE may not be the right treatment option for you.

RLE Benefits

RLE and eye lens replacement surgery in Marco Island offers several different benefits, including the following:

  • Less need for glasses and/or contact lenses: Most patients don’t need to wear glasses or contacts at all after their RLE surgery. Even if you still need to wear glasses or contacts sometimes, the time will be significantly reduced.
  • No longer need to worry about cataracts: Because cataracts can only form on the natural lens of the eye, patients don’t need to worry about cataracts after undergoing RLE.
  • Quick recovery process: The recovery process after RLE typically only takes a few days. Most patients go back to work in 2-3 days, but it can take several weeks for completely stable vision.
  • Long-lasting results: Since IOLs are permanent, you can expect to experience crystal-sharp vision for years to come.
