About Cape Coral
Cape Coral is a city in southwest Florida and has a population of almost 225,000 residents. The city is most well-known for its network of canals (it’s often called the “Venice of America”), with over 400 miles of waterways. Because of the number of canals, it’s a popular destination for anyone looking to fish, kayak, or boat. The city also features a number of beaches and marinas, a warm climate, and plenty of outdoor activities, bringing in many tourists looking for a place to relax in the winter. It’s also home to the Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, Sanibel Island, and a diverse art and culture scene.
What is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?
Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is a laser vision correction procedure that replaces your natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implant. This surgical procedure helps reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses and treats refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It’s also an effective treatment for dysfunctional lens syndrome.
Unlike other eye procedures, RLE can work for patients with powerful prescriptions and is perfect for those who aren’t suitable for LASIK or PRK.
During the procedure, a mild sedative is given, and the eyes are numbed with eye drops so you only experience mild discomfort. Dr. Ginsberg will then use ultrasound and a femtosecond laser to remove your eye’s natural lens and replace it with your chosen IOL. The type of IOLs we offer at Ginsberg Eye include monofocal, toric, multifocal, extended depth of focus, and light-adjustable lenses. Which one is right for you will depend on the refractive errors you’re struggling with.
Who is a Candidate for RLE?
Most patients struggling with severe farsightedness, nearsightedness, and/or astigmatism are good candidates for this refractive surgery, but there are some criteria we look for when determining a patient’s eligibility.
Ideal Candidates for RLE in Cape Coral Are:
- In good overall health
- Over the age of 45
- Want to rely less on glasses and/or contact lenses and achieve stable vision
- Not eligible for LASIK
If you have corneal eye disease, diabetic retinopathy, or risk factors for retinal detachment, this is likely not the right procedure for you.
RLE Benefits
RLE in Cape Coral offers several benefits, including the following:
- Long-lasting: Because the lens implants are considered permanent, you don’t need to have further procedures afterward to keep your crystal-clear eyesight. You can enjoy the results for years to come.
- Quick recovery period: Compared to other eye procedures, RLE has a very quick recovery time. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a week.
- No need to worry about cataracts: Because cataracts only form on the eye’s natural lens, once your IOLs are in place, you never have to worry about developing cataracts or undergoing cataract surgery.
