Tired of reaching for glasses or putting in contacts every morning? LASIK reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, so you can enjoy an active lifestyle with less dependence on corrective lenses.
At Ginsberg Eye, Dr. Barrett Ginsberg performs all laser LASIK in our in-office LASIK suite in Estero. Most patients notice improved vision within 24 hours.
When it comes to your vision, experience and technology matter. Dr. Barrett Ginsberg is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with more than two decades of experience in refractive surgery. As a fellowship-trained cornea specialist, he is uniquely qualified to decide who is a good LASIK candidate and who isn’t.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the most common type of refractive surgery. Your eyes are numbed with anesthetic drops. Dr. Ginsberg then creates a thin, hinged flap on the surface of the cornea with the IntraLase Femtosecond Laser. He uses the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® EYE-Q Excimer Laser to gently reshape the corneal tissue underneath, improving the way light focuses on the retina. The flap is then smoothed back into place.
Your LASIK evaluation includes a full medical and eye history and testing of visual acuity, refractive error, pupil size, eye pressure, eye health and corneal thickness and shape.
LASIK is performed in our in-office LASIK suite at our Estero location, so your procedure takes place in a familiar, comfortable setting rather than an unfamiliar facility. Consultations are available at both our Estero and Naples offices.
Wondering if LASIK is right for you? Take our short self-assessment below to learn whether LASIK or RLE best suits your vision needs.
| LASIK | RLE | |
|---|---|---|
| Ideal Patient Age | Typically 18–45 | Typically 45+ |
| Corrects | Nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism | Presbyopia, nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism |
| Eye Area Treated | Cornea | Natural lens |
| Technology Used | Laser reshaping of the cornea | Replacement with an intraocular lens (IOL) |
| Recovery | Vision improves within 24 hours | Vision stabilizes within days |
LASIK is typically best for patients 18 to 45. After about age 42, the eye’s natural lens begins to change, a process known as Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome (DLS). For patients 45 and older, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) may be the better choice. Dr. Ginsberg will recommend the right option at your consultation.

Most patients see clearly within 24 hours. Some take two to five days. Vision continues to stabilize over the following weeks.
You won't feel anything during the procedure thanks to numbing eye drops. Once the drops wear off, your eyes may feel uncomfortable or sensitive for a few hours, and should feel much better by the next morning.
Most patients can return to work the day after LASIK. We recommend taking at least one day off to rest your eyes and avoid screen time.
Yes. LASIK permanently reshapes the cornea. However, the eye's natural lens continues to age. After about age 42, some patients notice changes in their near vision from Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome, not from their LASIK wearing off.
Some patients may still need reading glasses, especially if they are over 40, due to age-related presbyopia.
Traditional LASIK used a blade to create the corneal flap. At Ginsberg Eye, the flap is created with the IntraLase Femtosecond Laser for an all laser, bladeless procedure.
The upfront cost of LASIK is higher, but it can be more cost-effective in the long term compared to the ongoing expense of contacts and solutions.
You may still have options. Dr. Ginsberg will guide you to the alternative procedure that best fits your vision goals, such as RLE for patients 45 and older.
