LASIK vs. RLE

Which Vision Correction Option Is Right for You?

Living with glasses or contact lenses can be frustrating—especially as your vision changes over time. At Ginsberg Eye, we offer advanced options for long-term vision correction, including LASIK and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE). Both procedures are designed to reduce or eliminate your dependence on corrective lenses, but each is suited to different vision needs and age groups.

If you’ve been wondering which is the right choice for you, use our self-test below and learn more about how Dr. Barrett Ginsberg can help you achieve sharper, lasting vision.

What Is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During this procedure, your eyes are numbed with anesthetic drops before Dr. Ginsberg creates a thin, hinged flap on the surface of the cornea using the IntraLase Femtosecond Laser. He then uses the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® EYE-Q Excimer Laser to gently reshape the underlying corneal tissue, improving the way light focuses on the retina for clearer vision.

Most patients notice improved vision within 24 hours, with continued stability in the weeks following surgery. LASIK allows patients to enjoy an active, glasses-free lifestyle—perfect for those under 45 who want lasting visual freedom.

Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK?

  • At least 18 years old
  • Healthy eyes with stable vision and prescription
  • Adequate corneal thickness for reshaping
  • No history of progressive eye disease

A LASIK evaluation includes comprehensive eye testing to ensure safety and precision. As a fellowship-trained cornea specialist, Dr. Ginsberg personally determines your candidacy and recommends the best solution for your visual goals.

What Is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?

Refractive Lens Exchange—also known as RLE—is an advanced lens replacement surgery designed for patients over the age of 45 who are seeking freedom from glasses or contact lenses. RLE is particularly beneficial for those experiencing the natural aging changes of the eye known as Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome (DLS), which affects focusing ability, night vision, and contrast sensitivity as early as age 42.

During this procedure, Dr. Ginsberg replaces the eye’s natural lens with a custom-selected intraocular lens (IOL) implant. The entire process typically takes about 10 minutes per eye. The result is clear, stable vision and a dramatically reduced need for corrective lenses.

RLE May Be Ideal For:

  • Individuals aged 45 and older
  • Those with presbyopia, nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
  • Patients noticing cloudy or less vibrant vision
  • Those previously told they’re not LASIK candidates

RLE also serves as a long-term solution for those developing early cataracts, as the new intraocular lens will never degrade or need replacement.

  • How is RLE different from Cataract surgery?

The main difference between RLE and Cataract Surgery is that cataracts need to be removed, as well as the natural lens of the eye.

  • How long does RLE Surgery take?

RLE Surgery is performed in-office and takes about 10 minutes per eye.

  • Do the results of RLE or LASIK wear off?

No, they do not. These procedures are intended to provide results that typically last for the rest of your life!

  • Is LASIK cheaper than contacts?

While the upfront cost of LASIK is higher, it is found to be more cost-effective in the long term compared to the ongoing expense of contacts and contact solutions.

  • How soon will I see results?

Many patients notice clearer vision within 24 hours, with vision continuing to sharpen over the first few days and weeks.
